The Shimano 105 R7170 Di2 groupset is the most affordable way into Shimano's 12-speed electronic shifting. It uses the same semi-wireless Di2 platform as Ultegra and Dura-Ace, with Servo Wave hydraulic disc brakes, and is configured to your crank length, chainrings, cassette and rotors. It ships from the UK with the brake hoses pre-bled and attached so you can fit it and ride.

Shimano 105 R7170 Di2 at a glance

  • 12-speed semi-wireless Di2 – wireless shift levers, with the front and rear derailleurs wired to one internal battery.
  • Same Di2 platform as Ultegra and Dura-Ace – fast, precise shifting that stays perfectly indexed, with Synchro Shift and button mapping through the E-TUBE app.
  • Servo Wave hydraulic disc brakes – quick initial bite and progressive, well-modulated stopping in all weather.
  • Widest gearing in the range – the 11-36T cassette option gives the easiest climbing gears of any Shimano road Di2 groupset.
  • Configured to you – crank length 165–175 mm, 50-34 or 52-36 chainrings, 11-34 or 11-36 cassette, rotors 160/140, 160/160 or none.
  • Ready to install – pre-bled hoses, battery, Di2 wires and charging cable included.

Choosing your 105 Di2 setup

Crank length

Most UK riders between about 1.70 m and 1.85 m ride 170 or 172.5 mm. Shorter riders, or anyone working on hip angle, often choose 165 mm. If in doubt, match your current bike or ask your bike fitter.

Chainrings and cassette

  • 50-34T with 11-36T – the easiest gearing of any Shimano road Di2 groupset, ideal for hilly sportives, heavy climbing, touring and Mallorca or Alpine trips.
  • 50-34T with 11-34T – a 1:1 climbing gear with slightly closer steps.
  • 52-36T with 11-34T – the most popular all-round setup for fast club rides and racing.

Rotors

Choose 160/160 mm for the most braking power (heavier riders, big descents), 160/140 mm for a lighter setup, or no rotors if you are keeping your existing centre-lock rotors.

105 vs Ultegra vs Dura-Ace Di2

All three share the same 12-speed Di2 platform, so shift quality is very similar. What changes is weight, finish and gearing:

105 R7170 Di2 Ultegra R8170 Di2 Dura-Ace R9270 Di2
Crankset FC-R7100 FC-R8100, lighter and stiffer FC-R9200, lightest and stiffest
Chainring options 50-34, 52-36 50-34, 52-36 50-34, 52-36, 54-40
Cassette options here 11-34, 11-36 11-30, 11-34 11-34
Best for First electronic groupset, sportives, endurance and winter bikes Serious club riders, sportives and racing on a sensible budget Racing, climbing, the lightest build possible

Want to save weight? Compare the Shimano Ultegra R8170 Di2 or Shimano Dura-Ace R9270 Di2, or read our 105 vs Ultegra vs Dura-Ace Di2 guide.

Compatibility

  • Frame: needs internal Di2 routing, flat-mount disc brake frame and fork, and space for the internal battery (usually in the seatpost).
  • Wheels: any disc wheel with a Shimano HG road freehub (11- or 12-speed) and centre-lock rotor mounting, or 6-bolt with an adapter.
  • Mixing tiers: all Shimano 12-speed Di2 road parts work together, so you can upgrade individual parts to Ultegra or Dura-Ace later.
  • Power meter: add the Ultegra FC-R8100-P or Dura-Ace FC-R9200-P dual-sided power meter chainset, both of which fit a 105 Di2 drivetrain.

Fitting and set-up

Because the brake hoses come pre-bled and attached, a competent home mechanic can fit this groupset with standard tools. You will need to route the hoses and Di2 wires internally, so check your frame's routing first. Pair the levers and update firmware through the E-TUBE PROJECT app – our step-by-step Shimano Di2 set-up guide walks you through it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Shimano 105 R7170 Di2 groupset wireless?

It is semi-wireless. The shift levers send signals wirelessly, so there are no wires in the cockpit. The front and rear derailleurs are wired to one internal battery.

Is 105 Di2 worth it over mechanical 105?

Di2 shifting stays perfectly indexed with no cables to stretch or adjust, shifts reliably under load, and lets you customise buttons and use Synchro Shift. If you ride a lot, the reduced maintenance and consistency make it well worth it.

105 Di2 or Ultegra Di2?

Shifting is very similar. Ultegra is lighter, with a stiffer crankset and the 11-30 cassette option. 105 is the better value and offers the 11-36 cassette for easier climbing.

Is a bottom bracket included?

No. Bottom brackets depend on your frame (BSA, BB86, PF30, T47 and so on), so we sell them separately.

Do I need to bleed the brakes?

No. The hydraulic hoses are pre-bled and attached to the levers and calipers. If you shorten the hoses for your frame, a top-up bleed is needed.

Can I use my 11-speed wheels?

Yes. Shimano 12-speed road cassettes fit the standard Shimano HG 11-speed road freehub.

How long does the battery last?

Typically 1,000 km or more between charges, depending on how often you shift. Charge through the port on the rear derailleur using the included EW-EC300 cable. Each shift lever runs on two CR1632 coin cells.

How long does delivery take?

Groupsets are normally dispatched within 5 working days. Standard UK delivery is free on orders over £200. Some configurations are held at supplier warehouses, so if you need it by a specific date, contact us before ordering.
