The Shimano Ultegra R8170 Di2 groupset is Shimano's 12-speed electronic disc groupset for serious road riders. It uses the same Di2 shifting platform and Servo Wave hydraulic braking as Dura-Ace, at a much lower price. This complete kit is configured to your crank length, chainrings, cassette and rotors, and ships from the UK with the brake hoses pre-bled and attached so you can fit it and ride.

Shimano Ultegra R8170 Di2 at a glance

  • 12-speed semi-wireless Di2 – wireless shift levers, with the front and rear derailleurs wired to one internal battery.
  • Dura-Ace-level shifting – Shimano quotes rear shifts 58% faster and front shifts 45% faster than the previous 11-speed Dura-Ace Di2.
  • Servo Wave hydraulic disc brakes – quick initial bite, progressive modulation and more pad clearance to cut rotor rub.
  • Configured to you – crank length 160–175 mm, 50-34 or 52-36 chainrings, 11-30 or 11-34 cassette, rotors 160/140, 160/160 or none.
  • Ready to install – pre-bled hoses, battery, Di2 wires and charging cable included.

Choosing your Ultegra R8170 setup

Crank length

Most UK riders between about 1.70 m and 1.85 m ride 170 or 172.5 mm. Shorter riders, or anyone working on hip angle or an aero position, are increasingly choosing 165 or 160 mm. If in doubt, match your current bike or ask your bike fitter.

Chainrings and cassette

  • 50-34T with 11-34T – the easiest gearing, ideal for hilly sportives, long climbs and Mallorca or Alpine trips.
  • 52-36T with 11-34T – the most popular all-round race setup, still with a 1:1 climbing gear.
  • 52-36T with 11-30T – tighter steps between gears for flatter racing and fast group riding.

Rotors

Choose 160/160 mm for the most braking power (heavier riders, big descents), 160/140 mm for a lighter race setup, or no rotors if you are keeping your existing centre-lock rotors.

Ultegra vs Dura-Ace vs 105 Di2

All three share the same 12-speed Di2 platform, so shift quality is very similar. What changes is weight, finish and gearing choice:

105 R7170 Di2 Ultegra R8170 Di2 Dura-Ace R9270 Di2
Crankset FC-R7100 FC-R8100, lighter and stiffer FC-R9200, lightest and stiffest
Chainring options 50-34, 52-36 50-34, 52-36 50-34, 52-36, 54-40
Cassette options here 11-34, 11-36 11-30, 11-34 11-34
Best for First electronic groupset, winter and endurance bikes Serious club riders, sportives and racing on a sensible budget Racing, climbing, the lightest build possible

Compare them directly: Shimano 105 R7170 Di2 or Shimano Dura-Ace R9270 Di2. For a deeper breakdown, read our 105 vs Ultegra vs Dura-Ace Di2 guide.

Compatibility

  • Frame: needs internal Di2 routing, flat-mount disc brake frame and fork, and space for the internal battery (usually in the seatpost).
  • Wheels: any disc wheel with a Shimano HG road freehub (11- or 12-speed) and centre-lock rotor mounting, or 6-bolt with an adapter.
  • Mixing tiers: all Shimano 12-speed Di2 road parts work together, so you can upgrade individual parts to Dura-Ace later.
  • Power meter: want power? Choose the Ultegra R8170 Di2 power meter groupset, or add the Dura-Ace FC-R9200-P dual-sided power meter chainset, which fits straight onto an Ultegra Di2 drivetrain.
  • Time trial and triathlon: see the Ultegra R8100 Di2 TT groupset.

Fitting and set-up

Because the brake hoses come pre-bled and attached, a competent home mechanic can fit this groupset with standard tools. You will need to route the hoses and Di2 wires internally, so check your frame's routing first. Pair the levers and update firmware through the E-TUBE PROJECT app – our step-by-step Shimano Di2 set-up guide walks you through it. Not sure Ultegra is right for you? Frequently asked questions

Is the Shimano Ultegra R8170 groupset wireless?

It is semi-wireless. The shift levers send signals wirelessly, so there are no wires in the cockpit. The front and rear derailleurs are wired to one internal battery.

Is Ultegra Di2 worth it over 105 Di2?

Ultegra is lighter, with a stiffer FC-R8100 crank and a lighter cassette, and offers the 11-30T cassette for closer gear steps. If you race or want a lighter bike without paying Dura-Ace prices, Ultegra is the sweet spot.

Is a bottom bracket included?

No. Bottom brackets depend on your frame (BSA, BB86, PF30, T47 and so on), so we sell them separately.

Do I need to bleed the brakes?

No. The hydraulic hoses are pre-bled and attached to the levers and calipers. If you shorten the hoses for your frame, a top-up bleed is needed.

Can I use my 11-speed wheels?

Yes. Shimano 12-speed road cassettes fit the standard Shimano HG 11-speed road freehub.

How long does the battery last?

Typically 1,000 km or more between charges, depending on how often you shift. Charge through the port on the rear derailleur using the included EW-EC300 cable.

How long does delivery take?

Groupsets are normally dispatched within 5 working days. Standard UK delivery is free on orders over £200. Some configurations are held at supplier warehouses, so if you need it by a specific date, contact us before ordering.
